Bungay Sunday XI got a kickstart to their season with a entertaining victory over opponents Great Ellingham. Being put into bat on a misbehaving wicket was always going to be a challenge for the youthful Bungay side and this became abundatnly clear when they were two wickets down 14 deliveries into the innings. Juniors Jonah Wicks and Oliver Hall looked to build an innings of sorts but beofre too long Hall hauled out (pun unintentional) for just 1 and soon after Wicks was unlucky to be caught and bowled thanks to a smart catch from the senior Draper. Another wicket fell and Bungay were already planning how to spend the rest of their Sunday looking stranded at 9 runs for 5 wickets in the 12th. Some very patient batting from Tom Wicks and skipper Jak Clark ensured the game wasnt up within the hour, infact before Wicks (20) was bowled the pair had added a modicum of respect to the score. Callum Clark continued the fight back with a quickfire 13 but Bungay’s innings came to a halt as J Clark (32) was caught in the deep in the 39th over, the Bungay total just 87.
Despite the low score, Bungay were confident of causing an upset having witnessing how the wicket played and the depth of bowlers in the team. Openers C Clark and Spalding kept things tight early on but it was clear that the Gt Ellingham batsmen were not going to hang around for long. The first breakthrough came in Clark’s 3rd over removing Spelman (11) followed by 2 further quick wickets, both catches courtesy of Brown. Clark & Brown both now had their tails up kept chipping away at the Gt Ellingham middle order ending with figures of Clark 6-15-3 and Brown 6-9-3. Skipper Clark kept on rotating the bowling attack not allowing any new bat to have time to settle which paid dividends as young Jake Swanston (2-13-2) claimed 2 wickets including the dangerous looking Watling (32) smartly caught at long off by C Clark. The win was sealed when Oliver Hall (1-0-2) cleaned up the tail in his 1st over leaving him on a hat-trick next weekend. Gt Ellingham faltering to 68 all out in just 20 overs. Special mention to Kye Prettyman making his cricketing debut and taking a difficult catch to contribute to the win.
Next Sunday Bungay entertain local rivals Brooke looking to build on this fantastic win.

14 May 2017  ~ Beccles    Away

Bungay (20 points) beat Beccles (10 points) by 27 runs

Bungay 254 for 8 wkts off 40 overs

Beccles 227 for 9 wkts off 40 overs

Bungay won the toss and elected to bat. C Mattocks and debutant Thomas Ridley got Bungay off to fast and confident start picking up boundaries in regular fashion off the bowling of Beccles spin duo Langley and the experienced Ruddock. It was in the 8th over when Beccles made the breakthrough, Langley clean bowled Mattocks (21) and repeated the trick next ball bowling Flood. This brought to the crease the in form Shipley and he wasted little time in finding the boundary rope. Runs were coming thick and fast for Bungay, some well timed shots from Ridley elevated his score to 23 before Beccles installed the pacey Fisher who got Ridley with the last ball of his first over. Shipley continued to play his shots and together with 14 year old Reece Ling they took Bungay past 150. Lings’ skilful innings came to an end just 8 runs shy of his maiden half century when bowled by Fisher but despite Beccles’ best efforts they could not remove Shipley. Contributions from the tail and more big hitting from Shipley provided Bungay with the more then respectable total of 254 for 9, Shipley finishing not out on 116.

Much like Bungay did, Beccles made a quick start with the bat. Langley dispatched Thompson-Friend for consecutive fours before he played around a straight ball only to be bowled. C Clark bowled well and kept runs to a minimum but it was Thompson-Friend doing the damage the other end, clean bowling the dangerous Fisher (31) filling the Bungay fielders with confidence. Thorpe offered many chances but survived and pressed onto 31 where youngster Hayden Ling brought about an end to his innings. Some very tight bowling from H Ling (3 for 19) & C Mattocks combined with determined fielding from Bungay meant that the required run rate was always increasing for Beccles. A Flurry of runs from Smith, Robson & Porter and a very patient knock from skipper Ruddock (58*) still wasn’t enough for Beccles, as Bungay managed to defend their high score winning by 27 runs and keeping their 100% winning start to the season. A very close game, enjoyed by all.
