U13s beat sprowston this morning by 31 runs.. great performance from all the lads . Special mention to James tenant for his bowling and Alfie Thurbon for Scoring 48 ...... well done all ..

Bungay took on Vauxhall Mallards in the quarter finals of the U13 pairs’ competition on 11 July. Bungay had home field advantage as winners of their group and looked to continue their progress with another strong performance.
Bungay batted first and made steady progress against an accurate Mallards bowling attack. The ball kept low on occasions and two of the 5 Bungay wickets to fall saw the ball barely bounce before it sneaked under the bat and hit the stumps.
Big hitting Joe Hill took the attack to the opposition. He hit his trademark 6 but also holed out twice on the boundary, trying to repeat the feat. Special mention must, however, go to the final pair, Will Hunt and Jack Masters. They put on 34 without loss which resulted in Bungay posting a competitive total of 298 for 5 (net 258).
It was essential that Bungay bowled and fielded well and they did just that. Cameron Greenhall and Alfie Wright opened the bowling, keeping the runs down and putting pressure on the Mallards’ openers. Cam made the first breakthrough and the game was finely poised.
Jack Masters, Herbie Beamish Mann and George Hunt bowled a tight 4 over spell in the middle of the game for a total of only 19 runs Jack clamed another wicket, which increased the pressure on the visitors and the game continued to be close and tense.
Tristan Hipper and Joe Hill bowled the last 6 overs. Tristan took 1 wicket for 11 and Joe, crucially, took 2 for 14. Mallards completed their innings on 285 for 6 (net 237).
Bungay were worthy winners although the game was evenly balanced for long periods. Once again, they have proved that when they play well they are a very competitive unit. They will play Dersingham in the semi finals in the week commencing 24 July.

Match Summary Bungay produced another ‘Team’ performance to record their biggest winning margin that i can remember by beating Kirkley by 205 runs. Bungay looked highly experienced against a weak inexperienced Kirkley side, which were embarking on their first game of the season. Put into bat Tristan immediately set the tone by hitting the first ball for four. He and Alfie looked particularly at ease and both played some classical cricketing shots in their partnership of 35. Next saw the new pairing of Cameron and Herbie, the captain Will wanted to mix up the middle pairings to see which system would work. Cam’ played elegantly but kept finding the fielders, whereas Herbie, once he had got his eye in smashed most deliveries to the boundary. Unfortunately both were bowled during their 4 overs, but we would like to think this will not be happening again! There partnership of 30 was an indication that Will might have made the right decision. Just to enhance his captaincy skills he required Joe and George to back him up- which they certainly did by smashing 38 against some quite wayward bowling. Joe must have been surprised to get one on the stumps as he was bowled by a pea roller, however he had hit what is now become customary during his innings, a straight six down the ground. George rotated the strike well but then faced an over of wides which is so frustrating for him and the team, any closer to the stumps and those 2’s I’m sure could have been turned into 4’s. The ‘dependables’ arrived at the crease with the score at a healthy 306, which as a team would have been really happy with. Not content with this score Will hit his first ball for 6 and then hit a further 5 boundaries in his 31. Jack too opened his shoulders and punished 3 deliveries back past the bowler. The last pair batted superbly by rotating the strike and running well between the wickets to amass a partnership of 51. Bungay finished on a very respectable 357 for the loss of 3 wickets- it would be great one day for no wickets to be lost!! In the past 2 games the bowlers had managed to take 8 wickets, you could tell they wanted more in this game, maybe even 10. Again the noise and encouragement from every player was first class towards their fellow team mates- they should never underestimate this factor as a team, even when there was a dropped catch there was great support from all. So Tristan opened up and immediately found his line getting a wicket in the first over, while from the other end Alfie seemed to be gaining a bit of extra pace and accuracy which combined to leave their first pair only scoring 2 runs from their 4 overs. Herbie replaced Tristan and replied in great style to be hit for a boundary by removing the batsmen’s off stump- a great spell Herbie. Jack’s fizzing off breaks replaced Alfie and continued where he had left off from the Hales match with a wicket with his first ball. Jack didn’t get as many wickets as last week but certainly tied the batsmen up as Will pulled the field in close. So the skipper came on after Herbie and duly he took his first wicket for Bungay. The bowlers were going through a great spell at this time where they knew they were being backed up by their fielders- diving stops from Herbie and Will certainly saved a couple of fours, followed by great throws into the stumps to set up several runouts (particularly one from Alfie). The eagerness of the fielders was exemplary; however there were a couple of dropped catches which weren’t difficult – an area that has been highlighted in which work needs to be done. Match Summary The team really continued their promising start the week before with a very solid performance on a pretty rough track in Loddon, the outfield wasn’t much better either. Hales and loddon choose to bat first and their opening pair looked well equipped to snuff out the pace of Tristan and the guile of Alfie. Alfie made the initial break through, while the other bowlers Gus and Will bowled tidily to keep Hales down to 221 at the half way stage. With the ball flying off a length, whilst also anything pitched short sailed way over the batsmen heads Bungay knew it would be a difficult batting track if their bowlers put it in the right places. Jack came on to bowl his off-breaks and put the ball exactly where it needed to go – on the stumps!! He claimed a record 6 wickets (helped with two great catches from Alfie) from his 3 overs and conceded just 9 runs, however he did not bowl against Hales’s county opening batsmen Chris Read. Unfortunately Cameron and Joe did and found that if you swing hard in this format of the game the ball will generally reach the boundary quite easily. Their last pair amassed 58 runs from their 4 overs, which gave Hales a real chance to defend their total of 249. Tristan and Alfie opened the batting. Alfie showed his solidness in defence while pouncing on anything that was in his right zone and smashed it too the boundary. Tristan however was a little bit more wary this week as he did get hit on the helmet facing his first delvery from Chris Read. Still the calling between the pair needs some attention, however praise has to go to their solid foundation that they gave Bungay in their pursuit of 250. Bungay were half way there when Gus and George came to the wicket. Gus, making his debut for under 13’s showed that he was not out of his depth and smashed a great legside boundary. George however was solid and took the attack to Hales and cracked 3 boundaries in his 15. Gus strayed from his crease when facing their leg spinner but between them they had put Bungay on the edge of victory. Joe and Cameron batted as the third pair and continued where they left off from the previous victory. Although there were not the same amount of boundaries their batting was just what was required, nudging singles, running well between the wickets and punishing anything that deserved it. Fundamentally we did not want to lose any wickets, which is what they did whilst progressing the score to 282. So it was down again to Will and Jack to take us home. ‘The Dependables’ were not put off by the pace of Read or even the state of the wicket and looked to be setting out to play out 4 maidens. But no, Will opened up and smashed 3 boundaries in a row and then played some fine front foot drives off Chris Read. Unfortunately there was a wicket between these two, but no one will know how Will was out- this did not deter Bungay and they went on to score 309. At times it looked like an easy win, but there were other times when it looked that we could have been in trouble, but the whole team put that feeling to bed. Every department played their part in this important victory, George behind the stumps again showed his strength’s, the bowling was consistent and piercing, while the batting was solid- each partnership amassed over 20 runs each. If that occurs each game then we should have no problems in this competition, especially combined with our eager fielding- great catches Alfie and Tristan. The most important factor of our team is that we are a team and this is demonstrated by the support and encouragement from every individual for every ball and every shot. Bungay batted first and amassed a substantial total which ultimately proved to be far too much for Beccles. Tristan and Alfie opened the batting. Tristan took the attack to Beccles while Alfie displayed very solid defensive technique. Tristan was run out calling for a run which perhaps was not really there but at the end of the first 4 overs, Bungay were 228 for 1. George and Herbie were the second pair. They both batted well, scoring boundaries and looking comfortable at the crease, but each perished once to the tall quick bowler, Bradley. George was bowled off his pads and Herbie was unlucky to chop the ball on to his own stumps. They moved the score on to 256 for 3 by the end of 8 overs. Joe and Cameron batted as the third pair, Cam making his debut for the club. Joe hit probably the shot of the day with a straight six back over the bowler’s head which was the result of timing rather than brute force. At the other end, Cam started slowly and was caught having given the bowler a relatively simple return catch. That did not get him down and he proceeded to clobber the ball around the pitch, hitting five 4’s in his innings of 21. By the end of the twelfth over, Bungay had a very healthy 308. Will and Jack completed the innings. They have become a dependable final pair over the seasons and they amassed runs with relative ease. Neither lost their wicket and both looked more and more comfortable as the overs passed. By the end of their stint, Bungay had a total of 342. Deducting 32 runs for the 4 wickets lost reduced the total to 310 but that was still surely enough? Tristan and Alfie opened the bowling. Tristan bowled with pace and accuracy and took a wicket in each of his 3 overs (all clean bowled), returning impressive figures of 3 wickets for 3 runs. Alfie bowls with less pace but his line and length generally mean that wickets follow. He took two wickets which meant that the Bungay opening bowlers took more wickets between them than the entire Beccles team. Herbie and Will came on as the first change at each end. Neither took a wicket but they bowled economically which is equally important in this format of the game. Jack took over at the pavilion end (sounds grand, doesn’t it) and bowled exceptionally well. He extracted bounce and turn out of the wicket and tied the Beccles batsmen in knots. He finished with two wicket maidens out of his 3 overs and conceded only 1 run. Cam also bowled well. He was unlucky not to get a wicket and I am sure it will not be long before he gets several. His two overs were, again, very economical and he conceded just 3 runs. Joe wrapped up the innings. No wickets today but they will surely follow as he is taller, stronger and quicker this year and is likely to give opposition batsmen considerable trouble. In the semi gloom towards the end of the match, George did well behind the stumps to stop the ball as it whizzed past the bastmen. As always, George used every part of his body to try to stop the ball! In the end, it was an easy win and a good match to get us on the road. Without wishing to get too carried away at an early stage in the season, the omens are good. I think that we have a strong batting and bowling line up and a lot of enthusiasm and I hope that we can do well in the trophy competition this year.
